Why is My AC Leaking?

Why is My AC Leaking?A leak is never a good thing for a homeowner, whether it comes from a faucet, a roof, a water heater or an appliance. When your AC unit leaks, that is an issue that requires your immediate attention.

When your AC springs a leak, it can be caused by any number of reasons. Before you can stop the leak, you need to find its source. Here are some of the more common reasons for an AC leak:

  • Dirty air filters – When the filters in your AC unit are dirty, it becomes more difficult for air to pass through. When this happens, the evaporator coils can freeze at the point of the leak, causing excess condensation. To remedy this, you need to replace or clean your air filters on a regular basis -- at least every 2 to 3 months.
  • Frozen evaporator coils – Dirty filters are not the only reason why evaporator coils freeze up. Sometimes, this is caused by a broken blower motor or the coils themselves being dirty. Whatever the reason, you must have clean, functioning evaporator coils to avoid leaks and subsequent problems with your compressor.
  • Broken or overflowing drain pan – This the pan located beneath the evaporator coils. It is designed to catch any condensation that produced by your AC. If this pan is cracked or is filled to capacity, then leaks will occur.
  • Condensate drain line is clogged – This is the pipe that drains the excess condensation from your AC. If it is clogged, it can also cause your AC to leak. Fungi, debris, and dirt can clog this pipe, which may require some cleaning with a vacuum or some drain cleaner to remove any blockages.

These are just some of the reasons why your AC may be leaking.
